Marking a significant milestone in the journey toward rural entrepreneurship and women’s empowerment, the Custom Hiring Centre for Multi-Commodity Processing and Value Addition was officially inaugurated at Purain village in Sidhwan Bet on Tuesday. This initiative, which drew enthusiastic participation from 46 attendees, aims to boost local economic development by equipping women with the tools and technology they need to enhance their livelihoods.

Empowering Women Through Advanced Facilities

The inauguration ceremony was graced by Mridula Devi, director of the ICAR–Central Institute for Women in Agriculture (CIWA), Bhubaneswar. Underlining the commitment to rural development and gender empowerment, the Custom Hiring Centre features an array of equipment specifically selected to add value to agricultural produce while easing the workload for rural women.

The center is equipped with sewing machines, a solar dryer, a chaff cutter, a motor-operated maize dehusker-cum-sheller, a belt drive water pump, and metal shelf racks. These tools and machines have been provided by ICAR-CIWA as part of the Special Component Sub Plan (SC–Sub Plan), reflecting targeted support to vulnerable groups, especially women entrepreneurs in rural settings.

Addressing Livelihood Security and Economic Inclusion

The integration of such technology is designed to improve the livelihood security of women in Purain village by reducing manual labor and increasing productivity. For instance, the solar dryer helps in preserving fruits and vegetables, enabling women to process and sell their produce even beyond harvest season. Similarly, the maize dehusker accelerates grain processing, improving efficiency and output.

This initiative showcases a practical model of rural entrepreneurship where women are central to value addition and local economic vibrancy. By enabling women to leverage modern equipment and processing facilities, the Custom Hiring Centre effectively contributes to greater income generation, financial independence, and enhanced social status for rural women.

Community Engagement and Support

The inauguration day also featured interactive sessions where the director, Mridula Devi, engaged with the local participants and panchayat members. Discussions centered on the importance of leveraging technology for sustainable rural development and how women can take lead roles in entrepreneurship and community welfare.

Participants showed keen interest in understanding the operational and maintenance aspects of the new equipment, along with avenues for marketing the processed products. Such engagement ensures that the facility will be optimally utilized while fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship that transcends traditional rural roles for women.

A Step Toward Inclusive Rural Prosperity

This project is part of a broader strategy by ICAR-CIWA and other stakeholders aimed at promoting inclusive development in rural India. Supporting women entrepreneurs by providing access to technology and training is seen as a crucial element in reducing rural poverty and gender disparity.

The Custom Hiring Centre is expected to serve not only as a technological hub but also as a center for skills development and entrepreneurship incubation. By bringing together women from various segments of the village and surrounding areas, it will act as a catalyst for collaborative growth and social empowerment.
