About Rituparna Ray Chaudhuri

As the interviewer, I sat down with the Kolkata-born educator-turned-entrepreneur behind DS Academy, a venture rooted in English and British literature and dedicated to honoring her late grandmother’s memory. She speaks candidly about transforming personal grief into purpose, the ancestral pull of teaching that set her on this path, and milestones like publishing The Immortal Fly: Eternal Whispers in 2019—while offering grounded insights on time discipline, networking with empathy, mentorship, and the resilience women founders need to carve their own space.

Gracy : What inspired you to start your own business, and when you started?

Rituparna Ray Chaudhuri : Teaching is my passion, and my ancestral legacy, along with my transformative experience at Presidency College, Kolkata, inspired me to launch my own business. This venture embodies my dedication to education and my long-standing commitment to making a meaningful, lasting impact.

Gracy : What unique challenges have you faced as a woman entrepreneur, and how have you overcome them?

Rituparna Ray Chaudhuri : Born and raised in South Calcutta, I started my teaching career at my maternal grandmother’s house in a Kolkata suburb, where life flowed smoothly until a series of devastating annual bereavements struck, including my mother’s death on February 7, 2019, and my father’s sudden passing on July 8, 2024, leaving me orphaned and plunged into financial hardship amid betrayals, mockeries, satires, and endless tears. Despite the scorn and disloyalty from those closest to me—even servants—and the daily struggle while pinching every penny, my unyielding determination, confidence, and deep devotion to literature, fortified by Divine blessings, propel me forward to realize both my mother’s dream and my own aspirations.

Gracy : Can you share a defining moment in your entrepreneurial journey?

Rituparna Ray Chaudhuri : Orphaned after my parents’ passing, I endured relentless mockery and scorn from those around me, including servants, with no emotional or human support to rely on. Yet, sustained by God’s blessings, my unwavering determination, confidence, and passion for literature propel me toward my aspirations. Through this journey, I am steadily building my identity on Google.

Gracy : How do you maintain a work-life balance while running your business?

Rituparna Ray Chaudhuri : I always strive to respect and prioritize Time. Effective time management is a key priority for me, ensuring efficiency and punctuality in all my endeavors.

Gracy : How do you approach networking and building connections in your industry as a woman entrepreneur?

Rituparna Ray Chaudhuri : To establish DS Academy, focused on English and British Literature, in memory of my late maternal grandmother who passed away on October 13, 2017, I am fostering strong social connections, a positive mindset, confidence, and effective oratory skills. Dedication, patience, and keen observation are essential for building a robust network to ensure the academy’s success. These qualities will honor her legacy and advance the academy’s mission.

Gracy : What strategies have you used and it worked to scale your business?

Rituparna Ray Chaudhuri : To foster meaningful connections, I strive to understand others’ feelings and perspectives with empathy, valuing their importance to me. Instead of focusing on their weaknesses, I aim to uplift and support their career growth, considering how I would feel in their position. Building friendships through mutual understanding strengthens my business and personal relationships.

Gracy : Can you share a memorable success story or milestone from your entrepreneurial journey?

Rituparna Ray Chaudhuri : I began my journey as a private tutor in my maternal grandmother’s home, driven by self-confidence, determination, professionalism, and wisdom. After the profound loss of my mother in February 2019, I published my milestone book, The Immortal Fly: Eternal Whispers, on July 8 (2019), through Partridge (U.S.A.) and Penguin Random House (U.K.), and despite my father’s passing on the same July 8, (2024); I overcame immense personal challenges that shaped my decisions. With unwavering dedication and Divine blessings, I am transforming my grandmother’s house into DS Academy, earning national and international literary awards, and celebrating milestones recognized in a press release.

Gracy : What role do you believe mentorship plays in the success of women entrepreneurs?

Rituparna Ray Chaudhuri : Women entrepreneurs succeed by embracing challenges with self-reliance, creativity, and a unique personality, making minimal circumstantial sacrifices. They balance confidence with humility, avoiding arrogance while commanding respect. Humanity and respect for others are key drivers of success.

Gracy : How do you stay resilient in the face of setbacks or failures?

Rituparna Ray Chaudhuri : After my mother’s death, I wandered aimlessly in the desert, finding solace only in the oasis of my father’s presence. When he too passed away, I was left in a barren world, grappling a stark world of failures and harassment with no inheritance to sustain me from my father’s side. Yet, inspired by my mother’s enduring wisdom and the trusting gaze of my innocent pets, I resolved to begin anew with unwavering resilience.

Gracy : How do you prioritize sustainability and social responsibility within your business model?

Rituparna Ray Chaudhuri : With unwavering determination and self-confidence, I fiercely guard my inner strength, allowing no one to intrude. My deep dedication to British literature, which I passionately cherish, fuels my resolve, and I transform every insult into a pivotal moment for decisive action. Through careful prioritization, I weave all aspects of my life into a focused, resolute path forward.

Gracy : In your opinion, what changes are still needed to create a more supportive environment for women in entrepreneurship?

Rituparna Ray Chaudhuri : A woman should consistently prioritize her own decisions, balancing duty and humanity without being overly emotional, while remaining focused on her goals and not letting circumstances or others dictate her choices. Trust is essential, but she must not let it sway her life’s direction. Such a woman, grounded in realism, serves as an inspiration, embodying the essence of a true ‘mother’ for future generations.
