Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stressed that women’s empowerment has consistently remained a priority for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, while addressing a gathering in Visakhapatnam. She highlighted the government’s long-standing efforts to improve women’s financial independence, healthcare access, and educational opportunities.

Focus on Policy and Inclusion

Sitharaman explained that several flagship schemes have been designed with the clear aim of uplifting women. She mentioned initiatives such as Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, which has enabled millions of women to open bank accounts and directly access welfare benefits. According to her, these steps not only encourage financial independence but also increase women’s participation in household and community decisions.

She also emphasized schemes like Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao and Ujjwala Yojana, which focus on education for girls and clean cooking fuel for households, respectively. Such programs, she said, illustrate how women’s empowerment has been embedded across multiple policy areas.

Strengthening Grassroots Participation

The Finance Minister praised the role of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and community-based women’s organizations. These groups have opened doors for entrepreneurship and local employment, helping women create sustainable income sources. Sitharaman noted that women in rural and semi-urban areas are especially benefiting from such opportunities.

Healthcare was another point of focus. She stressed that improving maternal health and ensuring quality medical services for women remain crucial for social development. Investments in health camps, insurance schemes, and preventive care were cited as part of this broader vision.

Call for Awareness and Action

While the government has introduced several schemes, Sitharaman urged women to stay aware of available programs and make full use of them. She pointed out that awareness at the grassroots level is key to ensuring benefits reach the intended population.

She also reassured the audience that the government would continue its efforts, not only through financial and welfare schemes but also by creating a safe environment where women can thrive in education, careers, and entrepreneurship.

A Broader Message

Sitharaman’s remarks come at a time when women’s representation in governance, business, and community leadership is drawing significant national attention. By underlining Prime Minister Modi’s long-standing commitment, she connected ongoing policies to a broader vision of inclusive growth.

She concluded by stating that empowering women is not just a social necessity but a national responsibility, adding that a stronger role for women in society translates into stronger families and a stronger nation.
