In observance of Pink October, a month dedicated to breast cancer awareness in India, a large-scale health outreach programme was organised at the Madurai Medical College auditorium. The event witnessed the participation of approximately 300 women from different age groups and communities.
The programme aimed to address one of the most pressing health concerns among Indian women—late detection of breast cancer, which continues to contribute to high mortality rates. Health professionals led informative sessions on:
- Early warning signs
- Self-examination techniques
- Importance of routine screening
- Breaking cultural stigma and silence around cancer
To encourage practical action, the organisers distributed free mammogram screening tokens to attendees, enabling them to undergo timely check-ups at affiliated hospitals.
An impactful segment of the event featured cancer survivors who shared their personal journeys, underscoring the importance of early intervention and family support. Their testimonies helped normalise open dialogue and inspired participants to prioritise health screenings.
The programme concluded with a call to expand similar initiatives in smaller towns and rural areas, where awareness and access to diagnostics remain limited.
