Under the umbrella of Mission Shakti 5.0, the Women and Child Development Department of Uttar Pradesh has initiated a large-scale campaign aimed at improving menstrual and personal hygiene awareness among women and adolescent girls.
The initiative is being implemented across 131 state-run facilities, including:
- Child-care institutions
- Women’s shelter homes
- Protection homes
- Residential facilities for women with mental disabilities
As part of the programme, health experts and trained facilitators are conducting interactive sessions with girls and young women. These sessions cover essential topics such as:
- Menstrual hygiene management
- Safe and affordable sanitary practices
- Dispelling myths, taboos, and stigma
- Awareness of infections and preventive care
- Psychological well-being and dignity during menstruation
By encouraging open conversations and providing factual information, the campaign seeks to break long-standing cultural barriers surrounding menstruation, particularly in vulnerable and underserved communities.
Officials have emphasized that the goal is not only to educate but also to empower young women with knowledge, confidence, and access to hygienic facilities and products. The initiative further aims to promote respect, health equity, and bodily autonomy for girls across the state.
The campaign is viewed as a progressive step in strengthening menstrual health infrastructure and awareness in Uttar Pradesh , one of India’s most populous states, where stigma and silence around menstruation often lead to health risks and social exclusion.
