An unsettling picture has emerged from the latest data shared by the Delhi Police , women and girls account for more than 60 percent of all missing-person cases reported across the capital this year. Out of nearly twenty thousand people reported missing till mid-October, over eleven thousand were women and girls.
Officials say the reasons behind these disappearances are often complex. They range from domestic issues and financial pressures to trafficking and forced marriages. Yet the consistent pattern of higher female disappearances reveals a deeper problem in how vulnerable women and girls still are in India’s capital.
Among children reported missing this year, almost three-fourths were girls, many of them teenagers. Experts warn that this reflects not only social neglect but also a lack of strong preventive measures and safe environments for young girls. Women’s rights groups are urging authorities to implement stronger protection programmes, better policing in public areas, and counseling support for families.
Delhi’s numbers are part of a longer trend. Over the last decade, women have consistently made up a majority of those reported missing. Activists say this is not just a policing issue but a social one , pointing to gender inequalities, unemployment, unsafe travel routes, and even online exploitation.
As the capital continues to grow, these figures remind us that safety and equality must advance together. Every missing woman is not just a statistic , she represents a story that deserves to be found, heard, and protected.
