In a significant step toward creating a more inclusive agricultural environment, the Odisha government has launched a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) focused specifically on ensuring that farm machinery is ergonomically designed for women farmers.
With women forming a large percentage of the agricultural workforce, often engaging in physically demanding tasks—traditional farm equipment, which is typically designed with male users in mind, has long posed a barrier to efficiency and safety.
The new SOP mandates ergonomic testing, field trials, and user feedback from women before machinery is approved for large-scale distribution. The initiative aims to reduce physical strain, improve productivity, and empower women working in agriculture by giving them tools that match their physiological needs.
It also aligns with broader state efforts to strengthen women’s participation in agribusiness, enhance rural livelihoods, and bridge gender gaps in farm mechanization. Experts believe this move could become a model policy for other Indian states, driving nationwide change in how agricultural technology is created and deployed.
