In a landmark move aimed at fostering economic independence among women, the Karnataka government has rolled out a comprehensive skill development program designed specifically for rural women entrepreneurs. The initiative, implemented by the Department of Women and Child Development in partnership with the Skill India Mission, seeks to train over 25,000 women in its first phase, equipping them with vital skills to thrive in today’s digital economy.

The program offers extensive modules covering digital literacy, e-commerce onboarding, business management, and financial literacy, along with marketing, branding, and legal awareness. By strengthening these competencies, the state government aims to empower women to establish and expand small businesses, access microfinance opportunities, and effectively navigate the challenges of entrepreneurship.

Training centres have been set up in key districts including Mysuru, Tumakuru, Belagavi, Hassan, and Vijayapura, with plans to extend further based on demand. Each participant who completes the program will be connected to schemes such as the Udyogini Yojana and Mudra Loans, alongside local self-help group federations, to receive funding and mentorship support. Market linkages are also being facilitated through platforms like ONDC and GeM, ensuring that women can reach broader consumer bases and sustain their ventures.

State Women and Child Development Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar highlighted the transformative potential of the program, emphasizing that it is “designed to create self-sufficient, employable, and entrepreneurial women in rural and semi-urban pockets, reducing dependence on seasonal labor and informal work.” Early responses have been overwhelmingly positive, with registration already underway at anganwadi centres and gram panchayat offices, and officials anticipating thousands of applications in the initial week alone.

The initiative has been widely praised by women’s collectives, NGOs, and rural development organizations, who view it as a significant step toward promoting grassroots entrepreneurship and financial independence among women across Karnataka. With structured training and support systems in place, the program is poised to open new avenues for women to take charge of their economic future.
