In a remarkable fusion of tradition, sustainability, and women’s empowerment, 44 women from Lakhimpur Kheri have crafted 25,000 eco-friendly diyas (earthen lamps) made from cow dung and clay for the Ayodhya Deepotsav 2025. This initiative, undertaken by three self-help groups, Jyoti Prerna, Sundar Prerna, and Sita Prerna has not only revived traditional pottery practices but also provided these women with new economic opportunities, collectively earning ₹1.25 lakh.
The project, themed “Prosperity through Lakhimpur’s Light,” began in July under the guidance of District Magistrate Durga Shakti Nagpal. Modern pottery wheels were provided by the district administration to facilitate the lamp-making process, allowing the women to produce high-quality diyas efficiently.
Sanju Devi, a member of the Jyoti Prerna Self-Help Group from Daurhara Block, expressed her joy in participating in the initiative. “Making lamps for Deepotsav for the first time was extremely fulfilling,” she said. Similarly, Bittu Devi from Sundar Prerna Self-Help Group in Gram Panchayat Hardi noted that the electric pottery wheel not only sped up production but also improved the quality of each lamp.
This endeavor not only highlights the resilience and creativity of rural women but also underscores the importance of integrating sustainable practices into cultural celebrations. By embracing eco-friendly alternatives, the women of Lakhimpur Kheri have contributed to a greener, more inclusive future.
