In the quiet villages of Tripura, change is underway in homes where women once lacked access to credit, training or business networks. On October 25, the state government launched the “Lakhpati Didi” mission, a bold endeavour aimed at making rural women financially independent through the formation of self-help groups (SHGs), skill-training workshops and community investment funds.

Already, in just the first month of the programme, over four lakh eighty-six thousand rural women have been organised into federated groups and more than one lakh eight thousand of them have reached the landmark of earning ₹1 lakh annually. Credit disbursements reached nearly ₹198 crore with an additional ₹100 crore set aside as investment funds, showing that the initiative is not just symbolic but operational at scale.

The mission couples financial literacy, market linkages and social enterprise models to ensure that these women are not passive beneficiaries but active entrepreneurs shaping their lives and contributing to local economies.

The significance of this initiative lies not only in the numbers but in the narrative shift. Rural women in Tripura are no longer waiting for aid; they are forging pathways to self-reliance.

The programme emphasises mentorship, peer support and business incubation rather than one-time grants. Participants shared stories of setting up poultry co-ops, producing organic vegetables, running artisan groups and creating digital micro-enterprises. Local officials highlighted that nearly 98 percent of loans under the scheme have been repaid, testament to the seriousness and capability of these women entrepreneurs. Moreover, the scheme explicitly names rural women as “Lakhpati Didis”, signalling social recognition of their new role as income-earners and decision-makers within their families and villages.

As the mission gathers momentum, the focus now shifts to sustaining growth, scaling enterprise clusters and expanding market reach beyond the district level.
