In a deeply troubling revelation, a recent report by the World Health Organization (WHO) has found that nearly 30 per cent of Indian women aged 15–49 have experienced violence by an intimate partner at some point in their lives.
Even more concerning is that more than a fifth of these women reported such violence during just the year 2023. The WHO warns that progress in reducing such violence has been painfully slow, raising serious questions about whether efforts to protect women are keeping pace with the scale of the crisis.
Each percentage point here is not just a statistic , it represents lives forever altered, homes scarred, and a system that still struggles to offer full protection or justice. The report is a clarion call for stronger policies, more survivor-centred services, and a deeper societal reckoning with the root causes of gender-based violence.
